42″ Sharp Aquos LCD TV - perfectly lagless
Please read this post for the full story of why I made this video: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=14133516#post14133516
Like many gamers who play timing-heavy games, I’ve been wary to upgrade to an HDTV because of the inherent lag created on many brands. Lag even exists with HD signals on some TVs, but I had come to believe it *always* existed on older (480i) consoles. I had done more than a year of research and had been disappointed. My options were to import a $2000 dedicated box from Japan to do special upscaling, or to “deal with it”.
I came across this TV whose “game mode” actually works as it should. I know almost all TVs released today have a “game mode”, but all the ones I’ve encountered still leave behind at least 30-40 milliseconds of lag (or more), which is just enough to make timing-heavy games unplayable. This Sharp Aquos (model number LC-42D64U) is *perfect* in game mode, even using old 480i signals. I decided I had to prove it! If you’re like me and absolutely refuse to settle for even 1 frame of lag, this is YOUR TV. Buy it.
Games shown:
- 3rd Strike: I do some combos and try some parrying on my CRT vs my new HDTV (both in game mode and in other modes). Played on PS2 through components (even though it’s 480i). Zero lag in game mode.
- Smash Bros Melee: Played on Wii through components. Zero lag.
- Smash Bros Brawl: Played on Wii through components. Zero lag.
- Perfect Dark: Played on N64 through composite (those red/yellow/white cables). Zero lag in game mode.
- beatmania IIDX: Played on PS2 through components (despite being 480i). Zero lag.

he’s talking about the lag, not the graphics. It’s a typical problem with the newer high definition tvs.

this doesn’t prove anything but how pretty your 42″ is.
maybe if you had the game on both tv’s at the same time, then we would see the comparison.

The only way you can actually see ghosting on an LCD is if the framerate is high like on Call of Duty 4 Modern Warfare or Call of Duty World At War.

This doesn’t prove ANYTHING. Where are the numbers? Where are the pretty graphs?

I don’t think Rock Band 2 0/0 settings are perfectly calibrated for zero lag. It is known amongst the RB community that the settings you should do in RB1 and RB2 differ, unsure why.

Infil, the LC37D43U model, will work like D64U? has a game mode?
Dynamic mode uses …
Dynamic mode uses extra proccesing on the image, to increase black levels and saturation.
Never use Dynamic mode for anything. Go to AVS forum, go to the Aquos (your model) thread, and look up calibration settings.
Not only will Dynamic mode add lag, but it’s very ugly and not a natural picture. Pick a mode like Game or Movie, go to AVS forum, get proper calibration numbers, put them in, and you will have less lag, and natural good looking picture. It’s night and day.
this is probably a …
this is probably a dumb question, but does the Aquos model I have is an LC-42D85U, and I have no idea how to switch it to game mode (running an HDMI Cable to my PS3). does this model support it, and if so, can ya help me out with tips, or a link telling me how to do it? just got my TV and sort of lost…
this isnt a valid …
this isnt a valid lag test. i own the same tv and via the timer test it has 25ms on game mode. it does have one of the best game modes ever. but this tv still has lag; you just dont notice it.
also you are inputting a 480i signal into a 1080p tv so there is automatically scaling lag.
I have a serious …
I have a serious problem where I cannot speed run super metroid because of serious lag issues. Even the VC version on my wii played on my old CRT has a lag problem. The only way I can play it is on the original console on a CRT. I’ve noticed that the lag only exists with SOME games though, and super metroid is one of them. Do you have super metroid so you could test it between the 2?
I use Dynamic ( …
I use Dynamic (fixed) for all HD content (that’s Wii, 360, and PS3 for me). You’ll only need game mode if you’re dealing with a 480i signal. Indeed, keep Dynamic on for HD gaming.
Incidentally, turning on game mode lowered RB2’s calibration from 25 ms to about 20-21 ms, through HDMI. This kind of confuses me a bit, but as discussed below, I believe RB2 to be an outlier, since the numbers (and play style) do not feel consistent with other games. Take that for what you will!
It does a great job …
It does a great job! No noticeable issues (in game mode). My friends and I did a “SMW night” a while back, where we plugged in a SNES and spent a few hours going through the entire game, trading the controller on deaths. It felt crisp and sharp!
I find Rock Band to …
I find Rock Band to be an outlier. It claims 25 ms of lag through both HDMI and composite, and both 720p and 1080p resolutions. This is an amount of lag that is very noticeable in music games, so why I don’t notice it on IIDX, a much stricter game through a non-HD signal, confuses me.
I find RB2 perfectly playable by calibrating the lag (both video and audio) to 25 ms. The numbers trouble me a bit, but I still rock out to IIDX regularly without issue.
