How do i get colour settings right on LCD TV?

I have recently purchased a 40 inch LCD TV and have been trying to get the contrast, colour, brightness and sharpness settings to the right levels. The default settings the tv came with don't look right.

Has anyone got any tips on getting this right as i am having problems. Is there a simple way do do this?

I'm guessing your tv is a relatively new one… i used this website to sort my settings out.

You could vary yours, depending on the model no.

Some DVD movies come with a set-up guide to getting your brightness, contrast and sharpness right. For, example the Star Wars DVDs have an interactive guide.

If you don't have one of these, then set the contrast and sharpness half-way and the brightness at minimum. Gradually increase the brightness until the picture looks ok. Then tweak the contrast up or down until the picture looks perfect.

If it looks too soft then gradually increase the sharpness.

For starters you can try a DVD that is THX certified. These have a guide that will help you make adjustments to your picture.
After that you can try searching for your TV's model number on avsforum.com. This website is strictyl for A/V stuff and people will often post the picture settings they have found to work best with their set. You might have to try a few to get the right one for you, but still very good for a free picture optimization.
Next, you can buy a calibration DVD which is made specifically for this purpose. Note that many of the people on the avsforum either have one of these DVDs or are professionals at TV calibrations.
Finally, you can hire someone to come out and calibrate it for you. This does tend to be quite expensive.
